Artist Statement
In the outskirts of town, I was able to submerge and be forgotten. Life no longer noticed me as I slipped into a world of oblivion through drug addiction and alcoholism. I withdrew from the city mainstream and into the margins of the outskirts. There was no pretension. You are surrounded by the vices in life: gambling, drugs, prostitution and poverty. You live in a simple world where all of your efforts are focused on procuring the chemicals that will change your meaningless life, into numbness and warm euphoria.

People who live in ‘Outskirts’ with you are searching in one way or another for the same thing you are. In this area you can find distractions not usually available in the nicer parts of town; some may sell sex, some sell drugs some sell religious paraphernalia, and some just beg to provide themselves with the things they need. This ‘Outskirts’ was where I used to dwell. I learned to love this area and its people who showed me their unfiltered humanity.

Clean and sober since 1989, I am tracing my memory lane by documenting my personal concept of ‘Outskirts’ through my art works. Here is a raw visual world that I wish to bring to you through my paintings; the colors, the textures, the environment, and the people who inhabit there. The ‘Outskirts’ are at the edge of town whether in the US or Mexico, just ask a cabby to take you to where the hotels are cheap and the liquor stores are plentiful.
