Artist Statement

“I would like to present to you this series – entitled "The Sublime." In this project, I want to describe the utmost moment of beauty. My work is inspired by nature: its forms and its colors. However, I do not wish to replicate nature as it is. The sublime is a euphoria that affects the deep recesses of one's consciousness. As is this experience of the sublime, my work is largely abstract. For me, color is one of the most powerful methods of portraying beauty. I blend and juxtapose different shades and tones to make them look their best. I want to show the viewer color as they have never seen it before. I want colors to look pure and fresh. The beauty in which I wish to capture is not merely superficial or simple. It has depth and many layers. And in the same way, there are many layers of ink and paint in my art. Color cannot stand alone. It needs forms and textures. In order to achieve the right structure, I use various techniques including: paintbrushes, knives and sometimes even a monotype printer. These different methods allow me express the depth of my subject. The sublime transcends any mundane moment and any reality. It is the ultimate experience of immersion in beauty.”-Tae Ho Kang
